Did you catch my super LONG Facebook Live video a couple of weeks ago? If not, don’t worry, it’s all in this blog post! I took this simple $2.99 Goodwill jewelry box from old and dated to a beautiful boho farmhouse style white jewelry box finished with black glaze. This is a super easy first thrift store makeover and I’ll take you through it step by step in this tutorial.

Supplies for White Jewelry Box with Black Glaze
- Country Chic All-in-One Decor Paint, in Cheesecake
- Country Chic Furniture Glaze, in Graphite (I used a premixed black furniture glaze for this project but I also included a glazing medium in my list of Amazon supplies below. It’s clear and you can add whatever color paint you want to it! Endless ideas there!)
- paintbrushes
- decorative metal sheet, elliptical
- tin snips
- E6000 glue
Believe it or not… I did this whole project on a Facebook Live video! It’s a long one but if you’re a visual learner you can watch the whole makeover on this video.
BTW, if you’d like to join the Thrift Store Makeover Facebook group that I mention, you still can!
Step One: Clean the Old Jewelry Box
The first step, as always, is to clean the jewelry box. This one was only dusty so it didn’t take a lot of cleaning.
Step Two: Remove the Glass
Next, remove the glass. Sometimes the screws are stuck or stripped but these came out easy. Save the screws and glass clips in a dish or bowl so you won’t lose them.
Step Three: Paint
The Country Chic All-in-One Decor Paint is like the other chalk-type paints that I use. No sanding is necessary. You can just start painting after cleaning your piece.
I gave it two coats of paint, letting the first one dry before going on to the second.
Step Four: Add Black Glaze
After the second coat of paint dries, I painted on a coat of furniture glaze and wiped it off almost immediately. BTW, I start glazing at about 44:00 in the video so you can skip to that part if you just want to see the glazing.
Step Five: Replace Glass with Decorative Metal
I replaced the glass with a decorative metal sheet. I traced the original glass onto the metal sheet and cut it out with my tin snips. (You can see that at about 22:00 on the video.) After the paint and glaze dried I glued it in and replaced the glass clips.
The Finished Jewelry Box
And here’s how it turned out.
You can find my coffee necklace and pressed penny bracelets (if I have any currently available) in our online shop.
Quite a bit different from the antiquing dust that I used last week, right?

I love the effect the black glaze gives the jewelry box. And the metal sheet is the perfect touch.

My computer is acting up! I might have reposted my comment but here we go again! I love the glazed look! Will you paint the bottom because of the price is showing? I would like to see you paint something grape purple?

I love all your jewellery box makeovers. I’ve even picked up a couple in charity shops to have a go, I’ve just not got round to it yet, I don’t want to get half way through and mess it up. Plus I can’t deicide how to do them, you have so many inspirational looks that you share I am spoilt for choice!

Beautiful! I love the black glaze over the white. I’ve haven’t thought of using black glaze but really love the look.

Love all of your jewelry box makeovers. Hope you find a way to upcycle the stained glass inserts; maybe a jewelry bail, chain, and suction cup for those of us who still love the stuff?

Great ideas! Thanks for sharing.

Very cute.

I didn’t see the Amazon link for the glaze that allows you to add your own color. That sounds really useful. Can you share it (again maybe, sorry!)?
ducttapeanddenim says
Thanks for asking, Rachel! Actually, you can add a little paint to any glazing medium to color it. Here’s the one I use most often: https://amzn.to/3KVJtrt [this is an affiliate link]. I don’t ever measure, I just start with a few drops and go up from there until I get the look I want. Let me know if you have any other questions.
