July 4 Window Makeovers

How to Make a Patriotic BBQ Grill Organizer from an Old Window

Today I’m proud to be hosting our monthly DIY challenge!  This month we have a group of amazing bloggers getting ready for 4th of July celebrations with a red, white, and blue challenge.  I’ll be sharing my red, white, and blue patriotic BBQ grill organizer.

I love it when a friend texts me a picture while they’re at the thrift store and says, “These reminded me of you.”  Is that a compliment that my friends think of me while they’re at thrift stores?  Anyway, my friend texted me a picture of these windows and told me they were $3.00 each.  But they were at a shop across town that I don’t ever go to so I asked her to pick them up for me.  Her hubby went to bat for me and got them ALL for $6.00!  I’m just using one for today’s project so sign up for my thrift store makeover email list if you want to see what I did with the rest.  I’ll post about them in a few weeks.

Supplies Needed for BBQ Grill Utensil Organizer

I’m not really sure what to call my creation so for now, it’s a “grill utensil organizer.”  Here’s what I used:

  • old window (plexiglass)
  • white paint
  • red and blue acrylic paint
  • paintbrushes
  • stencil brushes
  • stencil
  • spray adhesive
  • cup hooks

First, I followed the instructions on the spray adhesive for a temporary bond and adhered the stencil to the plexiglass.

My idea was to alternate red and blue states so they wouldn’t touch but that’s much harder than it sounds! Maybe I should have added some white states in there, too? Would it be possible to paint the USA in THREE colors without two states of the same color touching each other?

But I was pretty happy with how it turned out.  I also gave the frame another coat of white paint to brighten it up a bit.

I wasn’t able to remove the knob that was on the window so I decided to just add some cup hooks on either side.  For now, it’s hanging with some jute string but I’ll probably add some permanent nails to hang it by the hinges soon.

Now all our barbeque utensils are in easy reach while we’re grilling!

Love your window. Have you tried that stencil in 3 colors yet? Maybe just chunks of R,W & B? I tend to love anything done with old windows!

I love this idea. This would be a great diy to have handy for my husband when he’s bbqing. I agree with one of your followers, though beautiful, your map would be even more fabulous with white paint added too.
Thank you so much for sharing this great idea.
