Decoupage Jewelry Box Makeovers

Blue & Pink Jewelry Box DIY, from Dark & Drab to Vintage Style Sweet

You’ve probably seen lots of plain old jewelry boxes like this at thrift stores and garage sales, right?  Have you ever bought one?  I found this one at my local Goodwill for around $5.00.  It was clean and in good shape so I bought it but it sat in my closet through the winter… waiting for spring!  I nicknamed it my pink jewelry box because it had a pretty pink lining inside.  Nothing like the outside!

Supplies for Blue & Pink Jewelry Box Makeover

  • old jewelry box
  • Americana Decor chalky finish paint, Vintage
  • Americana Decor Light Satin Varnish
  • paint brushes
  • sandpaper
  • scrapbook paper
  • scissors
  • DecoArt Deco-Page

See the pretty pink lining?  And I was glad the mirror was still intact, too.  I started by cleaning it up good with just a damp rag.  Then I unscrewed the handles.  Make sure you put them in a little cup when you do this.  Those screws are TINY!

This took two coats of light blue paint.  This is one of my new favorite colors!  It looks almost gray but adds a little hint of color.

When the paint was completely dry I lightly sanded the edges to give it a distressed look, wiped it down well with a clean rag, then gave it a coat of varnish.

After the varnish was dry I screwed the handles back on.

Gorgeous!!!

But I wasn’t done yet!  I wanted to tie the blue on the outside and the pink on the inside together.  So I found a piece of scrapbook paper in my extensive stash that would do that.  I’m sorry I can’t give you a link to purchase it.  This piece has been in my studio for YEARS!  I’m sure whoever produced it doesn’t make it anymore.

I cut 4 pieces of scrapbook paper to fit the sides of the drawers, then painted a light layer of decoupage medium on with a small brush.  I applied the paper and smoothed it down.  One more thin layer of decoupage medium was brushed over the top.

I let everything dry overnight before putting the drawers back in.  (I learned the hard way that decoupaged drawers will stick if you put them in too soon.)

What do you think?

I don’t do a lot of pink but I’m LOVING this!  Maybe because it’s more of a vintage pink.  Now I feel like I should have had some pink roses in the background when I took these photos!  Someday I’ll get my photo styling together!

I really like this jewelry box. So Van Gough and mysterious. I just bought my first jewelry box to redo and look forward to play around with it. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love the surprise of the patterned paper on the sides. I found a simple small cupboard that I added “legs” to for my step-grand’s 18″ dolls. As she loves turquoise, I backed the shelves and lined the drawers with patterned paper and it was a hit!
