I’m excited today to be joining in with Jen Goode from 100 Directions and LOTS of other bloggers to celebrate National Craft Month! This week’s theme is color so I’m sharing a project using my favorite color — TURQUOISE! Here’s what it looked like BEFORE painting with my homemade chalk paint.

Supplies Needed for Turquoise Jewelry Cabinet Makeover
- old wood jewelry cabinet
- homemade chalk paint
- polycrylic
- paint brushes
- sandpaper or old rags
- metal sheets
- extra fine Sharpie marker
- tin snips
- staple gun & staples
For this project, I used an Ace Hardware paint called Turquoise Bay. I used my recipe for homemade chalk paint to make it a little easier to use.
The photo above shows how it looked after two coats of paint.
Then I distressed it with a wet rag. Sometimes I use sandpaper, too. If distressing is new to you find an old piece, or even just a piece of wood, to practice on. It looked like this after distressing:
Then I covered it with one coat of polyurethane. Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of that step. So we’ll skip over to the doors…
I store my metal sheets on a pant hanger. As you can see, I can hang opened and unopened packages along with smaller pieces leftover from previous projects this way. (I also store my stencils this way, too.)
To get the size just right I save the glass from the jewelry cabinet door to trace around with an extra fine Sharpie. If there are two doors I make sure the pattern matches on each side.
Then I cut it out with my tin snips and stapled it in. (Make sure you get the 1/4″ staples. Even with that length you’ll sometimes have to angle them so they don’t stick out the front.)
Ta da!
Here’s a close up of the distressing.

The turquoise cabinet looks great. The best part is the step by step process. I would bookmark this blog for more inspirational ideas like this one.

An inspiring makeover Ann! I look for jewelry cabinets to makeover, but everybody else must be doing it too…LOL. They are getting hard to find in my thrift stores. But I like what you did here, especially replacing the glass. I found one recently that had nice lines, but the drawers were missing. I didn’t know what to do about it so I left it. What do you do if it has missing drawers?
ducttapeanddenim says
Florence, I haven’t made over one without drawers yet. But I do have one in my closet waiting for a makeover! Keep watching the blog. It’ll probably be a few months before I get to it. And I’d love to see pictures if you paint one!
