How to Make a Home Message Center with Magnet Board from a Wooden Crate

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone.   #MyGo2Pen   #CollectiveBias    If you’ve got more than one person living in your house you need some sort of family message center to act as a home base for all your notes, lists, calendar dates, and maybe even a few love notes!  Today I’m sharing my home message center with a magnet board made from an old wooden crate.

Supplies for my magnet board message center | DuctTapeAndDenim.com

Magnet Board Message Center Supplies Needed

  • vintage crate or any wooden box
  • metal square
  • hole punch for metal
  • 4 thumbtacks
  • magnets
  • vintage buttons
  • strong craft glue
  • small jars
  • metal ribbon
  • staple gun
  • Pilot G2 Premium Gel Roller
  • notepad

Here’s a coupon so you can get some of these pens for yourself!

Of course, I had all the supplies to make the message center… ’cause I love to hoard vintage goodies for future craft and home decor projects.  This wooden box has been used in several different place in my home.

So I just needed to head to Walmart to stock up on some fun pens and notepads.

BTW, this photo is SHOPPABLE!  Just click on the photo to go to the product page.

Since the back of my old wood crate was very thin I decided to tack up my metal with thumbtacks.  So first I punched holes in the metal sheet, one on each corner.

Then I just positioned the magnet board where I wanted it and stuck a thumbtack through each hole.

The vintage button magnets were super easy, too.  Just glue the buttons to a magnet.

Some of these buttons are from my grandmother’s collection that I inherited.  Now I get to see them every day and think of her!

Next I cut a piece of metal “ribbon” the size of my wooden crate and stapled it in.  That will hold the vintage canning jars in place.  I found these jars at my favorite thrift store and filled them with Pilot G2 Premium Gel Roller Pens in some of my favorite colors.

I’ve used G2 pens for years and they’re some of my favorite because of their smooth flowing ink and comfortable grip, especially for my journals and doodling.  Not only are G2 pens my favorite but they’re also the #1 selling gel ink brand and the #1 selling pen brand in America!

But this is actually the first time I’ve ever bought the colors so you may be seeing them in some of my future projects.  They come in 4 different point sizes and 20 fun colors!  We found them in the school supply section at Walmart.  The black pens came in a package of 10 with a bonus pen and the colors came in packages of 4.  We decided to buy the packages that were exclusively sold at Walmart.

I know the calendar year starts on January 1 but I always feel like the year starts in the fall when kids go back to school!  It’s the time I get myself and my home organized again after the long summer break.  This repurposed message center will be perfect for leaving notes and reminders for family members.  I even added a few key hooks to keep us a little more organized.

Great hack! We have an old wine box sitting in our garage that would be great to use like this. There’s never a bad time to get stuff organized! Visiting from Inspiration Galore party.

Your message center turned out so attractive and versatile. I love that you have the little shelf area at the bottom + the key hooks, as well as the vertical, magnetic area. Looks great!
