Jewelry Box Makeovers

How to Turn a Thrift Store Valet into a Jewelry Box for Men

Have you ever run across an old valet like this at a thrift store?  I guess they used to be all the rage for men ’cause I see them all the time.  I usually pass them up but this old jewelry box for men had a secret inside that caused me to snatch it up, take it home, and give it a makeover!

Supplies for My Jewelry Box for Men

  • vintage valet from thrift store
  • DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint, yesteryear
  • tissue paper
  • decoupage medium
  • paint brushes
  • 320 grit sandpaper
  • varnish

The secret?  When you open the drawer it plays music!  I even found a little hand-written note inside with the name of the tune.  I found this beauty for only $3.99 at Goodwill!

The inside was boring beige and a little dingy but I took care of that by decoupaging tissue paper in the drawer.

After that, I gave it a couple of coats of paint, allowing time to dry between coats.

When the second coat was completely dry, I lightly sanded the edges.  Then I completed it with one coat of varnish.

Here’s the little note I found inside:

Bikeman doesn’t have much jewelry but he still needs a place for his watch, keys, and pocket change.

Thought you were going to say it had a secret compartment! But playing music is not something you often see with a man’s valet. Did you take the previous lining out or paper over the top of it? It turned out really cute!

I just decoupaged the paper right over the old fabric. Guess I should have made that more clear. Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll correct it in my post!

What an interesting piece! I had never heard of a valet before. Your makeover turned out great. I like the tissue paper lining you put on the inside of the drawer. Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday.
