How to Make a Fingertip Veil for Your DIY Wedding

I think this DIY fingertip veil was my proudest handmade project of the whole wedding!  Our first, and only, place we searched for a wedding dress was David’s Bridal, a very affordable shop with some gorgeous dresses… even in the $200-300 range.  Of course, we ended up spending a little over our budget on the dress.  But we made up for some of it on the veil!

Jordy wanted something simple and had exactly what she wanted in her mind.  No pearls, sequins, or bling.  Maybe just a little lace on top.  We found exactly what she wanted.  Exactly, that is, except for the price!  $198 for a piece of tulle, comb, and less than 6″ of lace!

So we decided to try making one.  It was amazingly easy!  I don’t think we had over 3 yards of tulle.  She wanted a shorter layer over a longer one so I folded it over on the floor and we adjusted the length until we thought it was right.

She tried it on a few times to get the lengths right.  Then I just took my sewing scissors and rounded off the edges.  She tried it on a few more times as we adjusted our rounded edges.  (Not her real bouquet below… those are what the flower girls carried!)

(Sorry I didn’t take more photos after it was all trimmed!)  When we had it just right I hand sewed the wire hair comb onto the center.

And now comes my favorite part.  I pulled my vintage 1986 dress out of the attic and cut some lace off it to cover the comb.  So she had her “something old” right on top of her head!

And just ’cause they’re so beautiful… here’s the bride with all her bridesmaids.

Lovely! What a beautiful picture of the young women! My mom made my veil; she had had a millenery class way back! It was too floaty. I remember stitching individual “daisies” from some lacey trim in place with a tiny pearl in the center around the bottom! Added a bit of character and just the right amount of weight. My daughter refused to get married without a tiara; she FORGOT to add her veil at the last minute! Great memories!
