Even a bland thrift store jewelry cabinet can look elegant with a few craft supplies.
Recently I found two very similar jewelry cabinets at different thrift stores. You’ll see the other rounded jewelry cabinet makeover later this week. I gave them two very different paint finishes so they looked even less alike after their makeover. This one had a few rough corners and some stains on the inside. So don’t ever pass on a jewelry cabinet or box if it’s stained inside. There are ways to make it look like new. Here’s what this one looked like BEFORE I took the white chalky finish paint to it!

Supplies for White Chalky Finish Paint Jewelry Cabinet Makeover
- Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint, white
- Americana Decor varnish
- paintbrush (I like this paintbrush for jewelry cabinets.)
- Canvas Corp Brands Tissuestock, French Script
- DecoArt Decou-page decoupage glue, matte
I gave this jewelry cabinet a couple of coats of white chalky finish paint then let it dry completely before finishing it off with a coat of varnish. That’s all there was so the paint job. I didn’t remove the handles like I sometimes do since the heart handles are the kind that are hard for me to remove.

Some of the felt inside was a little stained. So I cut tissuestock to fit the areas, painted on a thin layer of decoupage glue, smoothed the tissue on, then completed with another thin layer of decoupage glue. I thought the French script added an elegant touch.
And here’s the completed project. Usually, I distress them a little but when I saw it solid white I thought I’d mix things up and leave it like this. What do you think? I guess someone like it since it sold quickly at Paris Flea Market! I think I had a $30.00 price tag on it.
Makeover stats:
- Purchased from Goodwill for $6.99
- Sold at Paris Flea Market for $30.00

Is it possible to do the Finnish you had on the jewelry cabinet in kitchen cabinets ?
ducttapeanddenim says
Cathy, I’ve never painted kitchen cabinets with chalk paint but I have heard of people who did it with good results. You’ll just want to make sure you finish it with a couple coats of varnish so that the paint won’t continue to rub off.

I have bought jewelry cabinets at thrifts stores, I have about three of them I need to paint..I’m just worried about trying to do something with the felt on the inside of them. I sure hope I can make somewhat of a profit like you.

I’ve handled that in several ways… decoupage, paint… sometimes I pull out the old felt first, other times I just go right over it.
