Today’s Throwback Thursday thrift store makeover is a teal jewelry cabinet makeover that I first shared back in 2015!
If you’ve followed my blog for a while you know that I get stuck on certain colors and paint everything in site the same color for weeks at a time! Well, let me introduce you to my favorite new color. Readers, meet Thomasville Teal. Thomasville Teal, meet my readers.
Now that the introductions are over, I’ll share my thrift store makeover for this week… a vintage jewelry cabinet!

Supplies for Teal Jewelry Cabinet Makeover
- teal chalk paint (see list below)
- Minwax Express Color in Walnut
- Minwax Polycrylic
- hardware cloth
- E6000
- paintbrushes
- sandpaper
I know I took a before picture but can’t seem to find it anywhere.
Thomasville Teal is one of the new CeCe Caldwell Natural Chalk and Clay Paint colors. It’s close to turquoise (one of my previous favorite colors) and you can see here LOTS of things I painted turquoise.
NOTE: Our shop stopped selling CeCe Caldwell not long after I posted this. I’m now using several other brands of chalk and mineral paint that work the same way. Shabby Paints is one of my favorite. They have a color called Armor which is very similar. Dixie Belle’s Mermaid Tail is also similar.
How to Update a Thrift Store Jewelry Cabinet with Paint
No sanding is needed before painting. This jewelry cabinet has two thin layers. After they dried and I wet distressed the edges a bit I sealed the paint with Minwax Polycrylic
Here’s an old post with more detailed photos to show you how I wet distress this paint.
I wanted a little more age on it so I thinned some Minwax Express Color in Walnut with water, brushed it on, and wiped it off with a rag.
The glass in the doors was replaced with hardware cloth in this cabinet.
And these handles came off easily so I decided not to paint them like I usually do. After the paint job was finished I glued them back in with E6000.

Love the color, but Thomasville Teal looks very dark online. Not at all like the color on the jewelry box. Could it be a different color?
ducttapeanddenim says
Nope… it was Thomasville Teal by CeCe Caldwell Paints. But it was several years ago so they might have changed their formulas.

Love this color and the idea to paint the jewelry box. I have one of those that could use some sprucing up.
