This cute little jewelry box DIY has actually been around for a while. I’ve shared it on my blog before but I thought it was about time to share it with my new readers. Plus I’ve added a few more details that I forgot to include before… I think we first bought this thrift store find when Jordann was in high school (or maybe even before that!). First the jewelry box was painted a bright blue, then metallic gold. Both just with acrylic paint that we bought at a craft store.
UPDATE: I’m now selling my jewelry box makeovers in my Etsy shop!

Stenciled Jewelry Box Makeover
But Jordann moved out and left the little jewelry box behind so I took over from there! While it was still gold I used it as a display for my jewelry at flea markets. Then I decided to paint it.
I used to not a fan of jewelry box DIY projects. I really prefer to makeover jewelry cabinets. I always thought there were so many more options with cabinets — doors, drawer, & more configurations. But now that I’ve discovered stencils I won’t pass by vintage jewelry boxes when I find them anymore!
I think this bird cage stencil project is my favorite so far!
Supplies for Jewelry Box DIY
- old jewelry box
- CeCe Caldwell’s Natural Chalk and Clay Paint, Seattle Mist
- CeCe Caldwell’s Natural Chalk and Clay Paint, Vintage White
- paint brush
- birdcage stencil
- spray adhesive
- stencil brush
- Minwax Polycrylic
First, I gave the wooden jewelry box a coat of gray paint. When it was completely dry, I sprayed the back of the stencil with spray adhesive and waited 5 minutes. This allows the adhesive to be temporary instead of permanent. I aligned the stencil on the jewelry box and pressed firmly.
I applied the white paint with the stencil brush in a small, light circular motion then carefully removed the stencil.
You can see the paint history in the close up below. I wet distressed it after the paint was dry. With a little extra pressure I got the blue coat to peek out in a few places. I sealed the paint with Minwax Polycrylic .
I love all the gold highlights that appeared after distressing! I’m thinking I might paint more of my thrifting finds gold before the final coat.
