July 4

How to Decorate a Patriotic Christmas Tree

I told you back in January that I was going to leave one of my Christmas trees up all year long.  Guess what?  It’s still up!  But now it’s a patriotic Christmas tree!  I’ll keep it decorated like this from Memorial Day through July.

What You Need to Decorate a Patriotic Christmas Tree

I really like this little artificial Christmas tree. It came in a set of 3 trees — 2′, 3′, and 4′. I think we got it at Walmart but it was so long ago I don’t remember. We’ve used them EVERY Christmas for at least the last 12 years… maybe longer. They’ve come out for a few other holidays. Then, these last few years, I’ve just been leaving this one out. Mainly because I sell so many Christmas ornaments online and need to take pictures all year long. But it’s been fun to decorate it for every holiday.

First, it was my Valentine tree.  Then I decorated it for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter but somehow missed posting any photos of either of those.  I think it may get a baseball theme for a while this summer.  But I have some Christmas in July projects planned so it might look like December for a while during the summer, too!

Here are a few things I’ve used on my patriotic tree in the past:

  • red and blue bead necklaces
  • scraps of red, white, and blue fabric tied onto string or jute
  • paper rosettes
  • silver glittered stars
  • red, white, and blue clothespins
  • rusty star ornaments
  • vintage style patriotic postcards
  • vintage star-shaped tart tins
  • cast iron star Christmas ornaments
  • chalkboard star Christmas ornaments

Here’s a close up from a few years ago…

You may not be able to tell but there are tiny red and blue clothespins pinned all over it.  I made the scrap garland many years ago.  It was featured in Somerset Holidays and Celebrations along with my denim pennants.  I think Angie gave me the ‘pinwheels’ one year when we went to the singing flag.

I’ve collected a few vintage and reproduction patriotic postcards, too.

A few years back I added this framed piece I found, at all places, Dollar Tree!  It’s probably my favorite thing I’ve ever bought there!

This year I’m making a few other 4th of July signs out of scrap wood. Some are so small I think they’ll fit on the tree, too.
