Bedroom DIY Cleaning

How to Care for Your Pillows

Is anyone else having trouble sleeping?  Hubby, aka “Bikeman”, and I often toss and turn all night then wake up sore in the morning.  I’ve tried chiropractors and massage therapy over this last year hoping to make some improvement.  Finally we decided that maybe it’s our mattress.  We’re pushing it to the limit.  Most mattresses have a lifespan of 7-10 years.  We just passed 10!  Oops.

New mattresses can get very expensive so until we can fit it into our budget we decided to upgrade our pillows to see if that helps.

We ordered 5 pillows from Brentwood Home.  Yes, they are more expensive than any pillow I’ve ever bought. But they’re much less than a new mattress and since they offer a 30-day return period I thought we’d give them a try.   After just ONE night of sleeping on them I decided they were worth it!

This post contains affiliate links.  You won’t pay any more when you use these but I will earn a small commission on any purchases you make after clicking on them and I greatly appreciate it.  Brentwood Home also sent me 4 pillows.  As always, opinions in this article are my own.

Our new bed pillows with Hello There Handsome & Good Morning Gorgeous throw pillows.

I usually wake up with a kink in my neck.  I noticed the first morning that I didn’t have any neck pain so I asked hubby how he felt.  He said his neck didn’t hurt at all.  I can’t guarantee you won’t have any pain after one night but that was our experience.

Now, since I have these amazing new pillows I want to make sure they last for a LONG time.  So I did a little research on pillow care that I’ll share with you today.  But first, let me tell you about my new pillows and how you can enter for a chance to win them!

Now for the really incredible news… Brentwood Home has provided a coupon for 10% off their entire website, type in OURHOME, at checkout.

Helena Pillow

The Helena pillow is filled with a combination of latex ribbons and pesticide-free kapok fibers.  (Kapok is a tree that grows in tropical areas.  I had no idea what it was so had to look it up!  The fluff around it’s seed pods is very lightweight and resilient.)  It is both fluffy and supportive and makes a great pillow for those who sleep in multiple positions.

The 100% organic cotton cover zips open to make it easy to remove or add more filling to get it “just right”.

Brentwood Home sent us two of these and they’re my FAVORITE!!!  Super soft and it feels like they’re cradling my head.  These may be why my neck isn’t hurting as much now.  I like that I can shape it in different ways to support my neck when I’m laying on my back or side.

Carmel Pillow

The Carmel pillow is made with 100% all-natural molded latex and offers resilient support.  It has a traditional pillow shape that never needs fluffing.  The cover on this pillow is also 100% organic cotton.   Brentwood Home also sent us two of these.  This is Bikeman’s favorite.  I like it for putting under my knees when I lay on my back.

Zuma Wedge Pillow

The Zuma pillow is NOT included in the Sleep Wellness Bundle.  We ordered it because we were told that sleeping at an incline was good for your back.   We got the 7″ and Bikeman has been sleeping on it.  He really likes it.  It may take me a little longer to get used to it.  I added the wedge pillow cover you see in the photo above.

How to Care for Your Pillows

Bed pillows should be covered with pillow protectors before putting them in your pillow cases.  Pillow protectors can protect your pillows from stains, bedbugs, and allergens.

Brentwood Homes recommends that you spot clean your pillow with a damp, white cloth and allow it to air dry in a sunny spot, if possible.  Many pillows can actually be machine washed and dried.  I usually wash and dry two at a time so they won’t throw my machine off balance.  Pillows can be tossed in the dryer with a couple of dryer balls anytime you want to fluff them up.

How Often Should You Wash Pillows and Linens?

I’m going to include all household linens in this list since you wouldn’t normally separate them before washing.

I have trouble staying asleep because of my two 90+lb dogs who insist on sleeping in my bed. They are not nice about sharing space or pillows but I love them anyways.

I’ve never understood the people who buy a $1000 mattress, or more, and a $10 pillow. Or necks need the love!

Great tips for all linens but apparently I don’t wash my pillows often enough.

I have never heard of these pillows before or that a mattress should be replaced after 10 years. I should be looking for a new mattress too. I might also opted for new pillows in lieu of the new mattress. Glad I found your post today on the link party. Happy Summer, Kippi

We got ours at Mattress Firm. I don’t remember what the different lines/brands were. We picked a softer, mid-price mattress. About $800… and we just put it on our old box springs.
