A Mystery Thrift Store Makeover… Maybe a Tea Box? What Do You Think?

If you follow my Facebook page or Instagram account you might have seen this DIY wooden box last week.  I shared it because I had never seen a wood box like this and wasn’t sure what it was used for.  Well, I’m still not sure.  But the consensus was that it was a tea box.  I’ve seen tea boxes before but never with glass containers in them.  So what do you think this mystery box is?

My Black Painted Tea Box

Until I find something similar online, I’ll continue to call this a tea box.  This was a pretty simple makeover that I did last fall.  Scroll down and you’ll see the finished box on my shelf at Paris Flea Market.

After cleaning it up I gave it a couple of coats of chalky finish paint in Carbon.

Then I distressed the edges with sandpaper.

And finished it off with a coat of varnish.  Notice the difference in the paint before and after the varnish.  The chalky finish paint really changes after the top coat goes on… no matter if you use varnish, poly, or wax.

Sadly, I didn’t take a stage photo of the finished tea box.  All I have is this photo from the box in my display at Paris Flea Market back in October.  Wasn’t really a good idea… to put a black box on a black shelf.  It didn’t show up very well at all.

I’ve never seen a box like that, or even a tea box so I haven’t a clue to what it is. But it turned out really pretty in black, and I love the distressing.

I love it. Maybe a tabaco box to set on a gentleman’s desk

Maybe… maybe it’s missing lids to the glass part?

Maybe it’s a butter box for storing churned butter in a cool place after churning?

The little glass containers remind me of mini loaf pans. Maybe its fancy box to deliver homemade banana bread? Just kidding, I have no clue. I like Kay’s idea about it being a tobacco box.

Believe it or not… someone else suggested it might be a banana bread box, too!

I have no idea what the box was used for but it is interesting looking. I like the way you updated it for today’s needs.

A tea box had a key to it. Because of it’s modern hardware, my guess is that it is a humadore that held fresh tobacco and cigars or his favorite pipe.
