Welcome to this month’s Thrift Store Challenge! If y’all follow me on Facebook, you saw when I shared this on a live video and asked for advice on what color to paint it. Green was the consensus. So a green jewelry cabinet makeover it is. Here’s how it looked when I found it at Goodwill. Scroll down to see how I painted it and how it turned out.

Supplies for Green Jewelry Cabinet Makeover
How to Makeover an Old Jewelry Cabinet
Since this jewelry cabinet started off in good condition I just removed the glass and hardware and cleaned it with some spray cleaner.
TIP: Keep all the hardware and screws in a little cup, bowl, or jar so you don’t lose them. Those screws are TINY!
I only gave it one coat of paint. I knew I wanted a highly distressed finish so I didn’t need complete coverage.
After the paint dried I sanded it with a fine sanding sponge. I used a lot of elbow grease on it to get a lot of distressing. I wanted a lot of the wood to show through, especially in areas it would have naturally received a lot of wear.
After wiping the jewelry cabinet down with an old t-shirt, I mixed a little black paint into some glazing medium. You can adjust this mixture to your liking. I brushed the black glaze on with a paintbrush and wiped it off with another old t-shirt.
The next day I came back and gave it one coat of varnish.
Meanwhile, I used Rub ‘n Buff on the hardware.
Now that I’ve been in the habit of painting or decoupaging the sides of the drawers I think this one looks naked! Thank goodness the buyer didn’t think so!
I tried something new to replace the glass in the door. You can see more about this wire mesh in my article about what to use to replace the glass in jewelry cabinet doors. The wire mesh started out silver. I wanted it to match the hardware. I tried using the Rub ‘n Buff on it but it was hard on such a large area. Plus the edges were pretty sharp. So I ended up painting it with metallic gold acrylic paint.
So, how do you like how my green jewelry cabinet makeover turned out? I’ve had several people tell me it’s their favorite so far. And it was the first jewelry cabinet to sell at Roses and Rust this year!

Pam, you’re always a master at these jewelry box makeovers. You inspire me with every one, and every one is unique. You seem to do really well with them at markets. That’s encouraging too. I think another one is in my future. I’ve only done one so far.

I love recycling jewelry boxes. This one is especially pretty. Just a tip you might want to consider in the future. If you like glass in the door, but don’t like the pattern on it, I have found you an take a single edge razor blade and scrape it off. If any residue remains, you can clean it off with some lacquer thinner on a rag. At least that has always worked for me. I even took an ugly floral design off a large mirror that way.

Thanks! I’m going to try that.

I’m not much of a green fan, but I really like how this jewelry box turned out. Love the mesh doors; it really updates a bland box!

I’ve been doing jewelry box makeovers for a couple years. The first time I tried a glaze the piece looked so horrible I never used glaze again. Seeing your beautiful piece makes me want to dig that can of glaze out and try again.
