Look at this simple, unimposing jewelry cabinet I found at one of my favorite thrift stores. Talk about Plain Jane… but she wanted to be more. So I took her home and gave her a Duct Tape and Denim style makeover with chalky paint!

Supplies Needed for Chalky Paint Jewelry Cabinet Makeover
- jewelry cabinet
- Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint, turquoise
- Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint, white
- 220 grit sandpaper
- Rub N’ Buff
- paint brush (I like this paint brush for jewelry cabinets.)
- tiny screwdriver
This jewelry cabinet was in great condition when I found it so I just dusted it off and got started.
It only took one good coat of my favorite color paint since I wanted this to have a distressed look anyway.
After the paint dried I sanded it with a 220-grit sandpaper, putting a little extra pressure on the edges. The fine sandpaper won’t remove all the paint on the flat surfaces but it will give you a SUPER SMOOTH finish which I love!

White paint usually needs at least two coats over a dark wood like I started with here. This picture shows the drawers before and after sanding.
Now she’s ready for the hardware!
The hardware on this jewelry cabinet was fastened with tiny screws so I removed everything before painting. It’s important to have a little bowl or cup so you won’t loose any of them. (Yep… done that.) I squeezed out a dab of Rub ‘n Buff on my finger and rubbed it on the handles. Then I buffed it off. Now you see why it’s called Rub ‘n Buff? Very original, right?
I might have screwed them back on upside down but they fit so I didn’t worry about it.
I love this two-tone look. So much so that I’ve already painted TWO MORE jewelry cabinets like this. Stay tuned to see them… and don’t forget to sign up for my thrift store makeover email list below to have them delivered directly to your inbox!

Such a cute little jewelry box. You know I’ve never used rub n buff, but I’ve seen projects all over using it and I’m eager to try. I have some old hardware I saved from a makeover that needs a new lease on life.

I love the colors and how you turned the handles upside down. What a great makeover. I am going to keep an eye out for a jewelry box.

The hardware before looked boring and outdated but it looks fabulous with the two tone! I love it!
