DIY Painting

How to Paint Over Decals

How to paint over decals | DuctTapeAndDenim.comI’m still in Texas… recovering from a great Antique Alley.  Tomorrow is my travel day back to California so I thought I’d just share a quick post today to show you how to paint over decals on a wood piece.

I bought this caddy at my favorite thrift shop last spring.  It sat around my studio for a while because I had so many other projects going on.  I knew I wanted to use it for display at Treasure Island Flea but I outgrew those country decals LONG ago!  I wanted to paint it CeCe Caldwell’s Vintage White but wasn’t sure if that would cover those decals.

So first, I painted three coats over just the decals, letting each dry before I put on another.  These were thicker than my usual coats of paint.  Then I painted two coats over the whole caddy.  This is more than I usually do but even though the caddy was white it looked like it had been used to hold pens and crayons and had a lot of little marks on it.

I put a thin layer of wax over just the outside.  Since I’m keeping this I didn’t do a very detailed job and didn’t want to bother with all those little inside angles.

This really cleaned up the caddy and I’m happy with how it turned out.  It will get a lot of use at Treasure Island Flea!  If you are looking for more small painting project ideas follow my DIY | Painting board on Pinterest.

Boy, I wish we had read this post sooner! We just passed up a thrift store caddy because it was covered in stickers and decals! I bet your method would have worked beautifully! Our method would have been time consuming and tedious! Thanks os much for sharing this with us at our Something To Talk About Link Party – great info!

Go back and see if it’s still there! It would be an easy project!
