Canvas Painting Ideas | Dimensional Effects Stenciling on Canvas

At some time last year I bought some 5″ x 7″ canvases for a project.  I found a great deal on Amazon for a package of 12 so of course I bought it.  I’ve had extra canvases sitting around ever since then!  I wanted to make some simple farmhouse style artwork to tuck in a few vignettes around the house or at shows so I decided to use some Dimensional Effects that DecoArt sent me for another project (coming soon on the blog).  I ended up with these canvas painting ideas.

Supplies Used for My Canvas Painting Ideas

  • 5″ x 7″ canvas boards
  • craft spray adhesive
  • stencils
  • Dimensional Effects
  • painting spatula
  • acrylic paint
  • paint brushes
  • varnish

This was an easy project.  It just takes a couple of days because of all the drying time.

  • First, apply the stencils to the canvas boards, following the directions on the spray adhesive for a temporary bond.
  • Spread Dimensional Effects over the stencil with a painting spatula.  Carefully remove stencil without disturbing raised areas.
  • Let dry overnight.
  • Cover with two light coats of acrylic paint, allowing to dry in between.
  • When completely dry, cover with a light coat of varnish.

Here’s one of the finished pieces tucked up behind some vintage pieces on top of an amazing antique china cabinet my husband found at the Salvation Army for $75!  I should tell you the story behind that one sometimes…

You know I also have a long-time love affair with cow art.  Again, that’s another LONG story!  But here is my cow stencil.  I dry brushed a little gray paint over the top, too.

I also love vintage skeleton keys so I added them to a regular canvas.
