Today I’m getting to share one of my favorite new toys with you. I’m joining in with some of my blogging friends to show you how we’re using our new HomeRight paint sprayers and spray shelters. Scroll down to see all of their projects… They’re a talented bunch!!! HomeRight gave me a paint sprayer and spray shelter to use but the project and opinions in this post are my own.

Supplies & Tools Used for Paint Sprayer Makeover
- old jewelry cabinet from thrift store
- Homeright Small Spray Shelter
- HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish Sprayer
- DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint –
- DecoArt Light Satin Varnish
Here’s what the jewelry cabinet looked like when I found it at my local thrift store. It’s actually in pretty decent shape compared to some of the ones I’ve found before!
Painting is super fast with the sprayer but you do have to spend a little more time in prep.
First, I spent some time taping off everything I didn’t want painted.
Next, I thinned and strained the paint. The sprayer comes with a funnel (“viscosity cup” is actually the correct term). The instructions let you know how long it should take your paint to flow through the funnel to be thin enough to spray. If it doesn’t flow through in the right amount of time just add a little water. My mix was about 2 parts paint to 1 part water.
I also mixed my own color. I had a little of 3 different Chalky Finish paints leftover from other projects.
Since I was using a chalk type paint that was old, thick from being left open so often, and had a few crusty edges that had fallen in, I also strained it so nothing would clog up the sprayer.
It’s so much easier to show you how the paint sprayer works so I did a time lapse video for you. It’s less than a minute long. It did take a little longer than 60 seconds to paint but it wasn’t much longer!
The sprayer is great but I think that shelter may be my favorite thing of all! Most of the videos I’ve seen on YouTube have shown it being used in a yard or workshop. Since I live in a townhouse with only a patio and no garage, this shelter is a life saver. Notice how I painted on top of my patio table and right in front of my priceless Jeep grill (don’t want to get any paint on that!). I didn’t have to worry about overspray at all.
Here’s how I taped up the hinges. A little paint got through but it wasn’t too bad. It wasn’t enough to gunk up the hinge.
This part wasn’t pretty but it worked! I taped plain printer paper over the mirror and felt inside to protect it from the paint.
Here’s the finished jewelry cabinet!
Usually I distress the paint and replace the glass with wire or metal but this finish was so smooth and even I decided to just keep it plain and simple this time. Check out my 10 favorite jewelry cabinet makeovers from last year if you want to see some alternative finishes.

Such a great idea to use the sprayer for a small jewelry cabinet. I have hand painted several of them and they actually take a longer than expected. I will be using my sprayer from now on also. Love the small spray shelter also. It’s so handy!!!

Right? You’d think they wouldn’t take too long ’cause they’re so small. But they have a lot of detail.
