Have you seen the Anthropologie sewing kit? Simple and convenient… maybe a little expensive. But isn’t everything at Anthropologie? It’s one of my favorite stores even though I don’t own very many of their things. But I do get a lot of inspiration from them.
When I saw this I knew I had everything at home to put together my own. And I brought home a big Kerr jar from the Snap Conference so it was perfect. I wanted to put a little more in my kit than the Anthropologie kit came with.
Just before I left for the conference my favorite thrift store had a bag sale — $5 for a bag of vintage linens. I bought two bags! Some had rips and stains but that’s what I needed for this project. I roughly cut out a 6″ circle of a vintage linen piece and ran a gathering stitch around the outside edge.
Pull the threads on both ends… like you’re making a big yo-yo.
Then I layered some stuffing and the jar lid on the center of the linen circle and pulled the thread tight. One change I recommend, double your thread! I broke mine on the first try and had to do it again.
I shredded some old patterns to fill the bottom of the jar. Then I started layering in vintage sewing kit items: tomato pin cushion & pins, thread, buttons, hook & eyes, and even a wooden darning egg. (Which I probably won’t ever take out of the jar. I don’t even know how to darn!)
I placed the inner lid on top of the jar and screwed the outer lid on. I used my favorite alphabet stamps on the tag and tied it on with some jute.
Now that I look at it I think I like my version BETTER than Anthropologie’s. I’ve got a little more color and the supplies are really vintage!
And since mason jars are so hot right now, of course I had to start a Pinterest Board!

I really enjoy making gifts for quilters and seamstresses. Like this necklace I like to call “I Run With Scissors.”
