I used to get asked this question a lot. Not as much recently, but still every now and then someone asks me. I know I typed this out at one time and I thought I had posted it on my blog but now I can’t find it. So I thought I’d let you know again… even if you weren’t wondering.
Several years ago when I started my Etsy shop I wanted a catchy name to use. I started off selling vintage papers, tags, and other things that I made. Not any one thing that I could use to describe my shop like “Ann’s Handmade Tags” or “Vintage Paper Shoppe” or something like that. And NO jewelry at all. In fact, at that time I joked that jewelry was the one craft that I didn’t do and I didn’t need another craft to get addicted to.
Anyway, to get back to the point… at the same time my youngest daughter, who is also very artsy crafty, was really into making duct tape wallets and purses out of old blue jeans. One day it just came to me — “Duct Tape and Denim”. That didn’t describe exactly what I made but it did describe the idea behind the things I make. What can you do with duct tape and denim? Just about anything. And I like making jewelry out of something unexpected.
After I settled in as a jewelry designer I began to have customers ask where my duct tape bracelets where and if I make bracelets out of denim. What a great idea! So last year I introduced a couple of designs made with duct tape and denim. I’m still thinking about doing more but it may be a while.
I haven’t done a tutorial on these but I make them the same way I do my tape measure bracelets. Here’s a link to a video tutorial for them. Just imagine duct tape and denim there instead of tape measures!
‘Til the next project,
