Do you remember back almost two years ago when I first showed you this thrift store painting? I used the frame in my DIY chicken wire frames but I saved this beautiful “painting” thinking I’d eventually make something else with it. After I learned a little about photography backgrounds at the Snap Conference I decided this painting should be my DIY faux wood photo background!

Supplies for Faux Wood Photo Background
- thrift store canvas board or old painting, 1/8″ plywood board, or heavy cardboard
- wood backdrop paper
- spray adhesive
The backdrop paper is available in many shades and patterns. It arrived in a roll. As you can see, it’s 4′ x 12′ so I have way more paper than I needed. I’ll have to come up with some other projects to use it up.
You can also get vinyl photography backgrounds in wood patterns if you don’t need something as stiff. I wanted something hard that I could lean up again the wall or my washing machine, as you’ll see later.
I tried it on three different bases: the old painting, thin plywood, and a heavy piece of cardboard.
All I did was spray the flat surface lightly with the spray adhesive and carefully roll the paper across it, smoothing it down as I went. I left a little extra around all the edges and folded it over to the back. I tried using spray adhesive to hold down the extra on the back but ended up taping it down.
Now I have three different sizes. The two smaller fit inside my light box. You can see my home photography studio here.
Here’s my second home photography studio…lol… My washer and dryer are in my upstairs hall with a skylight right above them.
I usually take pictures of jewelry or my painting projects but here’s an example of this faux wood photography backdrop with a cute little baby!

I love seeing your photo setup in the laundry area! I always feel crazy for taking photos in weird places, but you’ve definitely got to go wherever the light takes you! 🙂

That’s right! Probably not the strangest place I’ve ever taken photos!
