My family isn’t Chinese but many years ago we started the tradition of eating Chinese food on New Year’s Eve. The hot and sour soup recipe I’m sharing with you today would be a great way to celebrate Chinese New Year or a New Year dinner on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. But it’s so quick and easy it also makes a good dinner on a cold weeknight.

Easy Hot and Sour Soup Recipe with Dumplings
- 32 ounces chicken broth
- 1 Tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 Tablespoon garlic and chili sauce
- 4 mushrooms, sliced
- 8 Ling Ling Chicken Potstickers
- 1/2 can water chestnuts
- 1/2 can bamboo shoots
- 1/2 can baby corn,
- 1 cup grated carrots
- 1 Tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 egg, beaten
- chopped green onion and wonton strips for garnish
I used these chicken and vegetable potstickers for this recipe. To complete the meal I followed the instructions and heated the Ling Ling Fried Rice and Steamed Dumplings with Chili Sauce in the microwave. I’ve shared this before but my husband thinks this rice tastes better than the rice at our local Chinese restaurant! It’s amazing that it’s so easy. The Chinese-Style Vegetable Fried Rice is our favorite but it also comes in four other recipes.
Chinese New Year Traditions
Since I wasn’t very familiar with Chinese New Year I decided to do a little research. I found out that dumplings are one of the traditional foods eaten on Chinese New Year. Made me happy, ’cause these are delicious!
Here are a few more facts and traditions:
- Chinese New Year is celebrated by 25% of the world’s population
- Homes are decorated with red, especially red lanterns.
- Red envelopes holding money are given as gifts.
- Don’t say bad words on New Year’s Day or they will follow you all year.
- Don’t wash your hair on New Year’s Day or you’ll wash your luck away. Same with sweeping your house.
- Oranges and tangerines are given to represent friendship.
- Fireworks are set off at midnight.
- Unlike our New Year’s DAY, Chinese New Year celebrations last about 23 DAYS!

I know I must be missing how many people this served. I just wonder if I need to double this for a family of five. Everyone would love this soup. Thank you.

Oops… thanks for bringing that to my attention. This made 3 really big bowls of soup for us. I would double it for 5 people. Let me know how y’all like it.

I can’t wait to try this soup! I love the hot and sour soup that they serve in Chinese restaurants, and want to make this at home because I can control what goes in it. I am watching my sodium and carbs… A little bit. I make my own Pho’, and I experiment with different forms of the protein that I put in it, and past that, I use whatever vegetables I can that are in my vegetable bin in the fridge. This seems to be that kind of soup as well, except I love the idea of hot and sour, and the egg in it. Keep these yummy recipes coming, and I just signed up to get emails from Duct Tape and Denim.

Thanks, Pam! I agree about making the soup yourself… then you know what’s in it.
